Tips For {Traditional} Fabulous Living

12 November 2009 | 6 Comments
My name is Lisa Anderson and I believe that perfection is a full contact sport! Although initially frightened by being asked to be a guest writer for the fabulous Michelle, I now realize that I may have to fill in again due to the fact that my list of topics, albeit mundane, is long. I can talk the paint of the wall so this should be a cinch right? I am dodging controversy and going with a lifestyle topic by the way. I hope I don’t bore you too badly, if this goes well I will shake it up a little next time. This would be much better if we were talking about it over a class of wine but since we can’t, I will do the next best thing and drink a glass (or 2) while writing.

Although I think of myself as au courant maybe even trendy or cutting edge at times with my ideas, I am at heart a very traditional girl. When all else fails I go with the tried and true in every respect. Home, fashion, entertaining, food, response and etiquette.

My self-observation has been that as people compliment me on my domestic or life style skills, that the things I do are just deeply traditional. Old school, preppy at times or even upper crust could describe the flow. I have become what I as a child admired, “that woman” or at least I hope so. I am prepared at the drop of a hat and seem to do it effortlessly, so I have been told... I have to tell you that sometimes making this life look so easy, ain’t so easy!

Let me give you an example, at no time is this “pulled together” skill more evident then when we go to our lake house on a semi-secluded island. The very small market closes at this time of year by 5pm, taking food and supplies along from the city can be a challenge. A car full of people and animals doesn’t leave room for much else. These obstacles however, do not prevent the endless flow of company from dropping in. In minutes, I can pull together a quick bite and a classy cocktail that all can enjoy. Here are my tips on how tradition helps to make it look effortless:
  • I keep a rotating stock of soft and hard cheeses, dried meats and fruits, olives, nuts and honeycomb. All these things keep for a very long time on the shelf or when kept cold.
  • Stock the bar. You must at all times have vodka, rum, wine (preferably one white one red) and a good manly mans booze. Girls, don’t get all feminist on me, I said I was traditional! Scotch, gin, and or whisky. When you see a decent bottle of champagne on sale get it. When the occasion arises and you are the one with the chilled bubbly it is so rewarding but only if you thrive on perfection like me. If you buy only one flavored soda make it ginger ale, works for mixer and sour tummy. Never and I say NEVER think that you can substitute a lemon or lime flavored soda as a clear soda water with fresh fruit to be served with alcohol. So no vodka mixed with lemon lime fizz!
  • If it’s wood, like a front door, railing shelf etc and you can’t decide on a color, paint it black. If it’s a wall paint it linen white or tan.
  • Candles should be stocked in various sizes in white for entertaining.
  • Blue plates make food look putrid. Clear glass, or any shade of white to beige.
  • Monochromatic flowers always work
  • If you choose only one wrapping paper make it brown paper and then embellish as appropriate for the occasion.
  • Monogram stationary can work as a thank you, invitation, regret, sympathy and many other greetings. Cranes always makes a beautiful paper product.
  • Men’s cashmere… perfect for everything. You can wear it, he can wear it, wonderful to lend to a cold guest. Gray is the best color.
  • For women always have either a black turtleneck or white (finished) tee depending on the season. Classic jeans like Levis and black flats and you can go just about anywhere and look chic no matter what type of figure you may have.
I could go on and on but you get the idea!  And God help me, I even give myself a D on formatting but it's late and it's my anniversary so I hope you enjoyed my post!

House Sitter Gift & Preparation - WFMW

10 November 2009 | 2 Comments
We're leaving for our California adventure {see here for all of theFAB guest posters who will be delighting you daily} and my sister has graciously offered to house sit for us while we're away.  It's a pretty big undertaking to care for Dexter and Monty, plus the house while we're gone, so we wanted to do a little something nice for her.

Here are my tips for nice things to do for your house sitter:
  1. Stock your fridge, freezer, & pantry with items that your house sitter enjoys.  Ask for their favorite cereal, beverages, & snacks.  Then, make sure you have milk, juice, bread, etc... also.
  2. Clean {does this really need to be stated?} your house.  Pay special attention to the bathroom, putting out fresh towels & toiletries.  Put clean sheets on the bed your house sitter will be staying in.  Vacuum, dust, & pick up.  It doesn't need to be immaculate, but it does need to be clean.
  3. A small gift is a nice thing to also leave.  We chose to leave a $15 gift card to the movie store near our house & a special present that I can't reveal just yet because she may read this before she arrives tomorrow.  Some other gift ideas?  You could leave cash for a pizza, you could get a gift card for fast food near you, you could prep a meal and leave it in the fridge or freezer, any small token is great.
  4. Leave notes on how to use the tv, dvd player, washing machine, programmable thermostat, coffee/espresso machine, or anything else that might be complicated to change, turn on, etc...
  5. Leave a list of emergency contacts.  Your cell number, a relative in town, & vet numbers are a good place to start.
  6. Last, but in my opinion, the most important.  Leave a heartfelt thank you note.  It doesn't have to be long, jut enough to convey your appreciation for their help.
Finally, enjoy your vacation, knowing that your house & your house sitter are being taken care of!

Would you like more awesome tips?  Hop on over to We are THAT Family for Works For Me Wednesday.

Kind of like Space Mountain... and pee.

I might be a little excited.  I may be all giddy and crazy and happy.  I might have jumped around and did a little happy dance.  I mean tomorrow, I will be headed to California, enjoying the goodness of my aunt and uncle, visiting friends, seeing family and soaking up the smell of the salty ocean.  Oh, before you hate me too much, I have lined up some fantastic women to keep you busy while I'm gone... so, you'll be having fun too.  Well, at least I hope you might, several have mentioned that they can't make promises as to the quality of their posts.  That is frighteningly hilarious and awesome all at once.  Kind of like riding Space Mountain when you're eight and it's your first roller coaster and waiting in line smells like what you think space might smell like if you're breathing pumped in, space smelling air and you're at the happiest place on earth only you want to pee a little from the excitement and nervousness of what awaits... a pitch black screaming roller coaster.  Wow, I should probably apologize in advance for what may be coming.

And have I mentioned that I've made no restrictions on their posts?  So, who knows what the heck you'll end up with.  I mean, you'll have:
  • Someone I may or may not have been drunk from one too many fishbowls while I brokered a big ass {diamond} ring for, who believes a skirt can never be too short and knows the value of a fantastic meal and a fabulous mimosa will delight you on Thursday - someone convince LISA to get a blog of her own!
  • You can celebrate Friday the 13th with AMY, the one who was afraid of me before she met me {turns out I was the one that should have been worried}, she loves a good pug statue, can be talked into crazy schemes for my own personal amusement, she learned the hard way that you can't flush baby wipes, and makes a killer boat drink.
  • My sworn enemy in 8th grade, author of the SPH 8th grade prayer, currently residing in Stepfordville and enjoying drunk kung fu fiiiiighting {which isn't so much kung fu as kicking in bathroom doors to 'rescue' Sarah from flashing her boobs to perfect strangers} is handling Saturday, show JACKIE a good time will ya?
  • STEPH is the one that is absolutely gorgeous & kind hearted, a dog mama extraordinare, crafty guru and wife to the killer of dreams will be entertaining you on Sunday.
  • A seemingly normal stranger that I convinced to be my bloggy bff... I highly recommend that approach to friendship {and NO you may not steal my ASH, go get your own} is going to be delighting your Monday.  She is hilarious and wonderful and totally puts up with strangers befriending her Sugar Britches.
  • One who is funny, incredibly talented, honest and who also owns 73 pairs of shoes... did I mention that she also runs insane relays through the mountains while pregnant?  Oh AND she has a master plan to have everyone calling her by her alter-ego name, BUNNY in the next 10 years.
  • And my dirty dirty sister, ELISE, the attic hider and fabulous one who picked her college by pulling it out of a hat is going to delight you on Wednesday.
Phew!  That is a a whole lot of crazy just taking over So Wonderful, So Marvelous.  And when I get back, I'll invite y'all over to sit through 900 slides beamed onto a white sheet tacked to the wall as I tell you about our adventure in LaLa Land, which is shaping up to be quite the trip.  So stick around, won't you?

Communication & Santa Baby {2009 Edition}

09 November 2009 | 10 Comments
Folks, my marriage works better when I communicate.  Tell you my hatred of foul smelling star-gazer lillies?  Oh, you mean, so I am not disappointed and sound like an ungrateful bitch when I get flowers from you?  What I want in bed?  Sure, I'll tell you cause, uh yeah nevermind, my mother reads this blog.  When I want you to please stop squeezing the toothpaste from the middle because it drives me insane and causes really petty fights that can totally be avoided?  What our long term financial goals are? We should discuss that?  All things I have learned to communicate instead of putting the assinine unreal expecatation hoping that he'll be a mind reader and just KNOW because he should just KNOW these things!  Right?  Wrong!

So, call us stupid, but that goes for gift giving too.  It makes it easier on my husband, it makes me happier, and I have to add that he usually throws in an amazing surprise {or two} that he's come up with completely on his own.  He also passes my wishlist ideas on to people that don't know what to get me because I might be slightly hard to buy for, or something like that.

For what it is worth, it makes me insanely happy when he does stuff like writing me romantic letters, making me cards rather than buying them, and doing other crafty stuff because he just isn't wired that way.  That's when I know he's taking time, putting in some massive effort and doing it soley because even after all these years, he's still in love with me.  So the shopping part, I cut him some slack and give him ideas.

Without further ado, I give you Things I want for Christmas, the 2009 Edition!
