Is Being a Mom Hard?

07 January 2015 | 8 Comments

We were sitting at the table and I was frustrated.

It had been a very long day.  I was tired.  We had a snow day, on the very first day I was supposed to get two hours and fifteen minutes of blissful quiet time in two very long weeks.  They alternated all day between being the best of friends and relentless bickering.  I. Just. Wanted. To. Clean. Out. My. Stupid. Over-stuffed. Closet.  That was my goal for the two hours and fifteen minutes of quiet time while my youngest was supposed to be at preschool.  I wanted to listen to something with adult lyrics and drink coffee and pull out all of those old maternity clothes and too skinny pants that had somehow gotten tucked into the depths of the closet.

That, and I’m not going to lie, there are some hideous shirts I was hoping to sneak out of Dave’s side too.

Instead, I was refereeing.  By dinnertime, I was pretty close to my exasperation limit, when Tate declared how much she LOVED her steak taco.  She wasn’t just saying how much she loved it, she was telling me that it was the BEST taco ever.  You would think, that winning dinner with a three and a half year old would be a good thing.  It might have been, but all I could do was stare in disbelief.  I wondered if maybe, an alien had taken over her body?  That had to be the answer.  She couldn’t be my daughter, the one who had thrown an epic, nightmare inducing, tantrum meltdown on New Year’s Eve because, that’s right, we had dared serve her steak.

After dinner, I was skimming Finn’s homework from the night before and asked him do a couple more math problems for practice.  Math is one of those things that we struggle with.  I say “we” because I’m trying to decipher just where his gaps in learning are from a grade skip, so new concepts don’t completely blindside him, while simultaneously not screwing him up with my ‘old math’ ways.  And he?  He’s just trying to figure out how fractions relate to measurement.  He did the problems, but I wondered if he really grasped it.

“Mom, is being a parent hard?  Like, is it a hard job?  Because sometimes, it seems like it’s really hard for you,” he asked, sliding over to give me a hug.

Most days, I hope as a mom that I’m doing more right than wrong.  Some days, though, I wonder if that is true.  That’s difficult for me to say out loud.  To admit, I am far from the world’s best mom.  There are two sweet faces looking to me for an answer that I don’t always have.  There are days I feel like a failure.  I am a  completely crap ‘new math’ explainer, I am a zombie in the morning, and there are days that I tell him to hustle because we’re late and he’s got four minutes to get to class.  I wonder if I’m asking the right questions, wonder if they’re really happy, or if they’re going to think that we somehow screwed up their childhood when they are grown.

See?  I assume that my parenting, will probably lead to therapy.

It’s not easy or for the faint of heart, this parenting thing.  Well, some days it’s easy and those days feel like a gift.  They exist, I’m convinced, to make sure we don’t eat our young, when we’re confronted with, “This is the most boring house ever!” as you glance at the thirty five choices for entertainment in your immediate vicinity.

Almost daily, I wage a fierce debate that chocolate is not considered a ‘healthy’ snack and wonder would if it would be much easier to just feed Tate all the chocolate her belly can handle.  Have you ever examined the logic of a three and a half year old?  It’s the stuff that torture is made of.  I’m also trying not to yell because I don’t want to be that yeller mom whose kids roll their eyes and tune out, but I still swear too much.  Some days I have to consciously remind myself that it’s OK to close the door and take a minute to finish cleaning out the closet while they argue about who cut off who’s hand with a fake plastic light saber.  Then I wonder, should I be concerned that they are cutting off each other’s hands with plastic light sabers?  Isn’t that the first sign of the dark side?

There are days that I’d love to not be the elected vomit cleaner.  Or nag about homework.  Or break up sibling squabbles.  Or days when I’m too freaking tired to try to figure out new math, so I don’t screw up my seven year old.  As long as we’re making this list, I also, unquestionably, still mourn the loss of sleeping in on Saturday mornings.

I tell myself regularly, it’s normal to have failure.  It’s normal to make mistakes and admit when you’re wrong.  It’s normal to have tough days when you just want to give up and start over in the morning.  It’s normal to wonder if you’re the ONLY one screwing up your kids.

When your frustration is maxed out.  When you’re at a loss for how to handle something.  When you are desperately searching for that child rearing manual they MUST have forgotten to give you when you brought this baby home.  When your seven year old sees you struggle.

I hugged Finn and considered all of these things before I replied.  I am smart enough to know that my days of unprovoked snuggles are numbered.  “Probably the hardest and best job I’ve ever had,” I confessed.  “I know I screw it up.  I probably make mistakes all the time.  But, I wouldn’t trade it for any job in the world.”

“Well, I’m never having kids if they’re as bad as Tate,” he replied and packed up his homework.

They will test our limits, are crazy freaking mess tornados, and bicker with each other.  They will make us worry, tell white lies, and forget their manners.  They will exasperate us, make bad choices, and probably not always be nice.  And we still have a job because of it.

Santa Visit.

01 December 2013 | 8 Comments

We were right in the midst of decorating the tree when Santa, who was out riding around on his sleigh on a test run, spotted us through the window and made a surprise visit to the house.  You can be sure that we were all stunned that he took time to stop over and see us since he is so busy right now.  He had to use the sleigh with wheels though because we didn’t have a lick of snow yet.

It was the real Santa too, Finn tested his knowledge with a lot of questions... just to be sure.

In case you were wondering, all of the reindeer are GIRLS, except for old Rudolph, of course.  Blitzen is the fastest and Vixen is his favorite.  Santa remembered that time when Uncle Christopher stayed up all night waiting for him!  And told us about what little Dave was like as a kid, even though that was a LONG time ago.  Santa even heard from the elves that Finn and Tate had JUST finished their Christmas list and he took it back to the North Pole personally!

He made time to talk to every child in the house, including Monty Poodle who got in a little trouble for eating the reindeer’s carrots two years ago.  He told Finn that that he needed to be nice to his sister and to keep up the excellent school work.  He also drove home the message we’ve been trying to instill about the season, time with family and friends, giving and service to others.  And Tate just wanted to eat her ‘candy corn’ aka candy cane that Santa brought to our house and touch the shiny buttons on his coat.  He took photos and we sang a song and he told the kids a very special story.

It was awesome, Finn told us so first thing the next morning.

First Day. First Grade.

This morning, we had planned to walk to school with friends.  He wanted me to take him into class.  I smiled because he still wants me around, he told Dave to go to work.

Then, it started to pour.  And thunder.  Our plans for walking to school with friends were thwarted.  I started a mad scramble for figuring out the logistics of Finn, Tate, a stroller, the pouring rain, and where to park.

I forgot first day pictures until we were in the car.  So I pulled out my cell phone and got one in his seat.

Smile!  I’m clearly winning mother of the year over here.

“I can go in by myself, Mom.”  I dropped him at the front door and he assured me he was ok.  The rain was down to a sprinkle at that point.  There was barely even time to say goodbye because people had parked all over, blocking normal traffic flow.

This wasn’t how I wanted this to go.  I wanted to walk him in and snap pictures at his desk and tell him to learn something cool.

He hopped out of the car, shut the door, and I realized in an instant that I had forgotten to give him a hug.  I had forgotten the one thing I had done every single day of last school year.  If there weren’t ten cars of frazzled parents behind me vying for a place to drop their child off, I would have yelled after him.  And probably done a Chariots of Fire run through the parking lot and squeezed the shit out of him.

Instead, my eyes welled and I tried to calmly talk to Tate who cried the moment he shut the door.

She sobbed harder as we pulled in the driveway and tried to keep me from unbuckling her.  As a bonus, it was pouring again.  Thirty minutes after dropping him off, she wailed, “Let's go get Finna Jaaaames. Heeeee's aaaaat schoooOOOOoool.”  She also told me 72 times that she wanted to go to school with Finn and reminded me that she had a Monsters University folder.

Because in her mind, that is the height of preparation.  Never mind the fact that she two and doesn’t have complete control over her bodily functions.  She’s ready.  She has the folder to prove it.

I kept thinking to myself, I need a do over.  A perfect first day of first grade morning, one where I don’t feel like everything is falling apart.

We walked to pick him up at midday and I gave him that hug as soon as he was out the door.  We took those first day pictures, he walked home and chatted with his friends, and we went and had a special lunch out.

Admittedly, it wasn’t fantastic, but there is always tomorrow.

Safe T City

25 June 2012 | 6 Comments

The police department in our city has a great community outreach program for kids entering kindergarten.  This is the 35th year it has been running, that is a whole lot of graduates.  It is a week-long summer program {they have several sessions and you choose either morning or afternoon classes} where police officers and teachers cover everything safety related.  The kids get to talk to officers, learn a special wave, and learn everything from fire safety, to gun safety, to what you should do if you come upon a stray animal.

Finnegan and his bestie, Oliver, attended the program last week and came home excitedly talking about fire engines, calling 9-1-1 in an emergency, and teaching us how to safely cross the street.  On the first day, they got to run the siren in a police car, if that doesn’t start the week off right, I don’t know what would. Finn’s favorite part was that they drove ‘cars’ in a mock city they have set up complete with streets, rail crossings and mini buildings.  At the end of the week, they have a graduation ceremony where the Chief of Police presents them with a certificate for completing the program.  Each child also receives a Safe T City badge, t-shirt, and a new bike helmet.

All of it, completely free of charge to any child in the city.

It is one of the things Toledo is doing right.

Last Night

05 May 2010 | 10 Comments
Last night, Finnegan asked me to rock him to sleep.

I should preface this by saying that I never get chosen over Daddy for bedtime stories & rocking.  Ever.

It's ok with me that he has a special time with Dave, the evenings are usually when I am catching up on blogging & gettting through my Reader and spacing out in front of the tv & picking up, often simultaniously.  I get him all day, we have naptime together to snuggle and talk and read stories.

But last night, he picked ME!  I felt like the cool kid in school chosen first for a team.  I walked in there with a smile on my face giving a little triumphant skip in my step.

It rarely happens.  Ahem.

So, I am sitting there rocking him and feeling him snuggle up as tight as he could get to me, bookie in between his head & my shoulder.

All I could think in that moment is REMEMBER.

I wanted to hold that moment, that feeling in my head forever.  It seems with every blink he grows into a young man.  One year.  Two Years.  Three years.  Soon he will be sixteen and we will 'hate' each other and he'll be too cool to give his Mama hugs in front of other people, if at all.  And I want to keep this in my memory to get me through those times.

Of Finn, curled up, snuggling his head onto my shoulder, my arms wrapped tightly around him, the glider squeaking its telltale squeek, babbling incessantly about silly things, readjusting slightly so he can be closer to me, smelling less like a baby and more like a boy.  Choosing his Mama.  In that moment, I could think of nowhere I'd rather be.

And when he's grown and has children of his own, maybe he'll read this and snuggle his little boy a bit tighter and feel the same way.

Two Wheels.

18 March 2010 | 7 Comments
Santa was generous to Finnegan this year.  He asked for a motorcycle.  Santa thought maybe he should start with a bike.  Not just any bike... a two wheeler.  It's a Strider balance bike & he he's happy that the weather is nice so that he can ride it somewhere other than the basement.  The bonus was getting to wear his helmet, all the cool kids wear one.

So the bike?  It's a two wheeler minus the pedals.  Weird, eh?  Finn said, "Oh.  Daddy?  I think we need to get some more pedals.  My pedals are gone."  The premise is that they learn balance by keeping their feet on the ground and control of their steering while rolling around.  When they finally master it, they push off and put their feet up.  I will be keeping my eyes closed when that happens.

For now, I'm enjoying seeing my almost 3 year old little man rolling around like one of the big boys.

What are you doing to enjoy the nice weather?

{Disclosure: Santa bought and paid for the Strider.  He, nor I have no affiliation with the company.}

Dr Seuss Birthday Party

Seuss Invitations
I hooked up with Cassandra on Etsy when I requested help with a Seuss themed party.  She had a great concept AND was {more than} willing to work with me on making it truly unique.  I always design, print, and assemble my own paper goods, but she was so good that I let her do the design work for me, worked with her on changing the rhyme to something that worked for us, and she sent me the files so that I could print and assemble myself.  I can't tell you how much I enjoyed working with her and though this is something I probably could have done myself, it was her brilliant concept.

It was a book!  Made up of a front cover, a back cover that contained the party information, and a 6 page story about Finn, his friends & the party in between.  It was the cutest, most brilliant thing I've ever seen and I can't tell you how many phone calls I got raving about it.  I printed it on two blank greeting cards and then carefully glued the spines together.

Seuss Menu & Food
The food was great and because I am slightly OCD in the party planning department we came up with names for everything we served and had little tags saying what it was and which book it was from!

Seuss Games & Activities
Since we had a pretty big mix of ages (from 1 - 87) we wanted really simple games and activities. We set up Finn's ball pit and tunnel activity set so the little ones could play. We also had crayons and giant coloring pages set up along with every Seuss book known to man for reading. We created a simple guessing game and 4 jars set up in the entryway along with pieces of paper for people to guess the correct number of candies in the jar.

Seuss Party Favors
Another Etsy find! Along with my request for Seuss ideas came this BRILLIANT idea from Mommy's Little Critters. She made me red & blue fish soap! She was also awesome to work with, she gave me an endless list of scents to choose from, I went with cotton candy and blueberry. Even months later they still smell awesome and the kids thought they were very cool! I designed the cute favor tags {so they knew it was soap & not candy} and packaged them up and put them into the favor bags.

And here are the favor bags! I ordered Seuss hat tags and glued them on to bags that we filled with awesome Seuss stuffed animals that we bought at Kohl's during their Kohl's Kids fundraiser... thank you so much to DentaLori for calling me to tip me off about this! Our original idea was to purchase Dr Seuss books for all of the kids at Costco, but they stopped carrying the 4 pack of small board books just before I needed them! {They have them again!} We also included m&m's just in case someone didn't win the count the m&m game above, they wouldn't be left out!

Seuss Party Decor
Lots of colorful balloons.  We also printed images of Dr Seuss book covers, stuck them in cheapie acrylic frames and had them sitting on the tables.  All of the book covers are incredibly colorful and people were talking about some of the more obscure titles we found.

Dr Seuss Party Decor

I made the Seuss welcome sign & paper bunting using the Grinched font {found at dafont.com} and leftover paper die cut hats from the favor bags.  Mayor Finn wording came from here.

Seuss Extras
Probably my favorite idea was the guest book.  We had a table set up at the entrance with Dr Seuss' Happy Birthday To You book and this sign. We asked guests to write a message to Finn on any of the pages and had lots of really colorful sharpie markers set up. There are some great entries and he's going to be able to keep the book forever.  It was such a great keepsake from the day.

Finnegan wore a cute Hop On Pop t-shirt.  Dave had a Wocket In My Pocket t-shirt.  Midge & Elise had cute Seuss shirts.  Brenden & Dylan wore Thing 1 & Thing 2 shirts.  It was so hilarious seeing all of the t-shirts show up... they really added to the decor!

There are some unbelievably creative ideas you can do with a Dr Seuss theme. My biggest problem was narrowing down to the best stuff.  Other ideas I loved and didn't end up using... having the Grinch sled {& reindeer dog} to put the gifts on, a contest for the silliest socks, a green egg hunt {use green plastic Easter eggs}, having some of the old Dr Seuss cartoons playing on tv, and Pin the Wocket on Finn's Pocket game that would have been really be easy to create.
