I Love Thai Food.

When Dave and I started dating, I was a gigantic commitment-phobe.  I wouldn’t have even really called it dating.  I mean we were hanging out and having fun.  He was way more into me than I was into him and we both knew this.

Sex?  Sure.

Spend the night?  Ahhhh… no thanks.

I thought he was too nice.  He opened my car doors.  He liked my family.  He owned a suit and took me for sushi.

One night after we had been seeing each other steadily for a few months, we were on our way to get dinner.  I don’t even really remember the context of the conversation we were having anymore, but just as he was getting out of the car, I blurted out, “I love you.”

Sheer panic set in immediately.

And then, I instantaneously thought, “What the fuck did I just say?  That did NOT just come out of my mouth.  WHY???  Why would I say that?”

Not because I didn’t mean it.  Even in all my denial about him definitely NOT being “the one,” at that point we were both stupid for each other .  It was flat out shock.  WHO does that?  Certainly not me.  Not ever.  No way.

Maybe he didn’t hear me.

He was half out of the car when I said it and paused for half a sec, then leaned down to smile at me and asked me to repeat myself.

So I said the first thing that popped into my head, “I love Thai food.”

He responded with, “I thought so.”

Then, he made fun of me the rest of the night and I sat mortified trying to explain it away.  I can’t be in love.  This isn’t love.  No, no, no, noooo way.

But you all know it was.  It is.

He stands by my side and is proud of my accomplishments.  He holds my hand through the tough stuff and celebrates the amazing stuff.  He is the man I get to make cute babies with only now, he’s legally obligated to spend the night.  And every day, he is the person I wake up next to.  And argue politics with.  And make fun of and laugh with.  He is the hardest working man I have ever met.  He is a present father and strong role model.  He willingly and daily puts in half the work it takes to make our marriage a success.

I get to be absolutely stupid for this man for the rest of my days.

And all because one night I blurted out, “I love Thai food.”

What is your love story?

diary of a fun ruiner

Our bedtime routing is pretty standard around here.  Baths, books, breathing treatment (for Ryder), brush teeth and into bed.  It used to be really easy - Emmerson and Ryder would get into bed and lay quietly until they fell asleep.  I should have known it couldn't last forever.

For reasons I've yet to determine (other than he likes screwing with me) Ryder recently decided just going to bed for mom and dad was over-rated and began to protest.  He was telling us he was scared of bats.  And vampires.  And scawee guys.  And outside.  This was usually followed up by requesting some milk.  And for me to tickle his back.  On top of these shenanigans, he'd come down in the middle of the night wanting to sleep in our bed.  I'd have to get out of bed, take him back up to his room and get him back to sleep.  If I was lucky, he wouldn't wake the baby but there were many times he thought it was a lot of fun to piss me off in the middle of the night.

Needless to say, this business was about to put me over the edge.  It's rough enough to be up at least once a night with the baby, but this game was making me look like I'd been a 2 week drinking binge over morning.  Clearly, something had to be done.

And that's when I got the most brilliant idea I've had to date.

Me:  Ryder, do you know that when you sleep you grow?  And you know what else?  Mommy doesn't really want you to grow anymore.  In fact, I've been thinking about giving your shrinking pills so I can keep you teeny, tiny forever.

Ryder:  But mom, I have to gwow.  Dat's what people do.

Me:  But I want to make sure you're my little guy forever.  I just don't need you to grown any bigger than you are, so I'd really like it if you just wouldn't sleep anymore.

Ryder:  Mo-ooom.  I don't want to stay wittle foreva.  I want to get big wike dad.

Me:  Well, I don't think we'll have anymore of that growing business so whatever you do, don't sleep.

And guess what?  He went right to sleep and stayed in his bed all night long.  And has ever since.  Just another way for me to prove to Zach that I rock mommy-hood.

Tiffany is one of my favorites, her stories are hilarious, her kids are cute as hell, and she tells it like it is.  You can find her blogging about all her mom awesomeness at Diary of a Fun Ruiner.  Or on Facebook.  Or on Twitter.  Go on over and follow her, I won’t be too jealous.

Happy Fourth.

My mom’s rooftop is just about the best place in the entire city to watch the fireworks.  Every year she cooks an amazing dinner and we have a really relaxed evening watching all of the boats on the river, the people heading down to Promenade Park, and listening to the Mud Hens game across the street.  This year, she stocked Finn up with those snap things you throw on the ground, party poppers with confetti, and sparklers.  He was in absolute heaven, he even climbed into his pajamas early so he could snuggle up with Gigi.  Little Miss Tate slept through both the Hens’ fireworks show AND the main event without a peep.

Hope you and your family are enjoying the long holiday weekend as much as we are.
